Adventure

Paraglide from Kovk

Tandem paraglide flight above the Vipava Valley vineyards

One of Slovenia's most celebrated launch sites, the certified Kovk plateau sits at 860m with views across the entire valley. Experienced pilots from the Kovk Paragliders' Association offer tandem flights. The official landing zone is the meadow in Log — a short walk from a very good pizzeria.

Kayak the Soča at Solkan

The Kajak Center Solkan sits on the rapids of the Soča River, where turquoise water runs between limestone gorges. The centre teaches basic paddling, runs raft trips, and will take you to the bank that was once the Italian border. One of the most dramatic river settings in central Europe.

Cycle the valley floor

Gentle cycling routes link Vipava, Ajdovščina, and a string of wine estates across the valley floor. Most accommodation provides free bicycles. In summer a free e-bike service runs from Ajdovščina up to the plateau. Stop whenever a cellar door appears — which is often.

Year round; best March to October

History

Rihemberk Castle, Branik

One of Slovenia's oldest and most imposing castles, with the tallest tower in the country. Perched on a hilltop above the village of Branik with views stretching to Italy on a clear day. Seven centuries of additions have produced something that still feels genuinely imposing rather than prettified.

Culture

Pilon Gallery, Ajdovščina

The finest collection of work by Veno Pilon — Slovenia's most significant 20th-century painter. Housed in Ajdovščina's civic centre, it's consistently the most surprising discovery visitors make in the valley. Free entry on weekday mornings. Give it an hour and stay two.

Local Tradition

Attend an osmica

A Slovenian tradition with Roman roots: farms and wine cellars open as impromptu taverns for ten days, twice a year. You eat from the farm's table, drink from the barrel, and don't leave until the wine runs out. Check the local calendar before you travel — an osmica weekend changes the character of the valley entirely.
